Learn how to make homemade chocolate syrup in 2 minutes using just two ingredients. This quick recipe is a healthier alternative to many store-bought syrups.

Making chocolate syrup at home is incredibly simple. For years I relied on commercial chocolate syrups, but most contain refined sweeteners and additives. This recipe needs only two pantry staples and comes together in under two minutes. The result is smooth, chocolatey, and far cleaner than many store options.
Maple syrup is my go-to sweetener here because of its flavor, but you can substitute agave or another natural liquid sweetener with a similar consistency. Avoid artificial sweeteners; they won’t perform the same and aren’t a healthy choice. You can also experiment with raw cacao or carob powder instead of unsweetened cocoa powder — note that raw cacao is more intense and carob is naturally sweeter, so you might need to adjust amounts to taste.
Use this syrup anywhere you’d use a regular chocolate sauce. It’s delicious drizzled over vegan waffles, stacked on pancakes, spooned on crepes, stirred into oatmeal, or mixed into plant-based milk for a quick chocolate drink.

Instructions
-
Add the syrup and cocoa powder to a bowl and whisk until smooth and fully combined.
-
Use immediately or store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 weeks.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of cocoa powder to make the syrup more or less chocolatey and to balance sweetness.
- Any natural liquid sweetener with a similar texture will work; choose one you prefer for flavor and consistency.
- If using raw cacao or carob powder, start with the same amount and tweak to taste since flavors and intensity vary.
