Today marks day one of the 31-Day Clutter Crusade — a simple, focused challenge to reclaim small areas of your home and build lasting habits for organization and clutter control.
Day One Task: Clear and organize the top of your desk or the primary surface where you pay bills, clip coupons, or keep your computer and work materials. This is a high-impact area: a clear desk improves focus, reduces stress, and makes routine tasks faster.
Work through every item on the desk and decide whether to keep, donate, or toss. Use these quick, practical steps to make decisions fast and confidently:
- Keep it — If the item belongs on your desk or in a designated nearby spot, return it to its proper home. Create simple zones: bills and mail, office supplies, electronics, and a short-term inbox for things you’ll act on today.
- Donate it — If the item is in good condition but you no longer need it, place it in a donation box. Label the box and set a reminder to drop it off within a week so it doesn’t linger.
- Toss it — If something is broken, stained, or no longer useful and not suitable for donation, toss it. Put waste in a bag and take the whole bag to the outside trash or recycling bin at the end of your session.
Why this method works: Making a three-way decision for every object removes indecision and prevents clutter from returning. You spend only a few minutes per item, and the cumulative result is a tidy, functional workspace that supports productivity and calm.
This task — focusing strictly on the top of your desk — should only take 5 to 10 minutes. Set a timer if that helps. When you finish, you’ll have a clear surface and a plan: a home for each item you kept, a donation box ready to go, and a trash bag to remove clutter immediately.
Share your results if you like — it can motivate you and others. I’ll be sharing progress and tips on social pages and here on the blog, and I’d love to see before-and-after photos or a short note about what surprised you during the quick clean-up.
31 DayClutter Crusade 2014
To help you through the month, here’s a straightforward guide and mindset for the 31-Day Clutter Crusade:
- Keep tasks small and specific. Small wins build momentum and reduce overwhelm.
- Decide quickly. Use the keep/donate/toss rule and try to make a decision in under 20 seconds for each item.
- Create simple systems. A labeled drawer, a small tray for keys, an inbox for papers — these will keep your cleared spaces organized long-term.
- Be consistent. Spend 5–15 minutes each day on the assigned area; consistency beats perfection.
- Remove items immediately. If you decide to donate or toss, put items in the donation bag or waste bin right away so they don’t drift back onto surfaces.
Tips for maintaining a clear desk after day one:
- Adopt a nightly reset: spend one minute putting stray items back in their homes before you finish the day.
- Limit paper clutter by scanning or recycling mail immediately; keep only actionable items in a single, visible mail tray.
- Use containers to corral small items like pens, chargers, and sticky notes so surfaces stay open and tidy.
Keeping a workspace organized is a small habit that pays big dividends in focus, efficiency, and a calmer home environment. Take the five or ten minutes now — clear your desk, reclaim your space, and enjoy the satisfaction of a purposeful start to the Clutter Crusade.
Have a rocking day!
