What You Need To Make This Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese Board

  • Cream cheese: A plain block works best; low-fat or dairy-free alternatives are fine if preferred.
  • Smoked salmon: Thinly sliced lox, torn into small pieces.
  • Scallions or chives: For a bright onion flavor; chives give a milder result.
  • Capers: Roughly chopped so their briny punch is balanced across the board.
  • Red onion: Finely diced for color and bite; substitute minced shallot for a gentler flavor.
  • Lemon zest: Use a zester or peel thin strips with a vegetable peeler, then mince for bright citrus notes.
  • Everything but the bagel seasoning: Optional, but highly recommended for texture and savory flavor.

What Can I Use In Place Of Everything But The Bagel Seasoning?

If you don’t have a premade mix, combine about 1 teaspoon white sesame seeds, 1/2 teaspoon dried onion flakes, a pinch of dried minced garlic, a small pinch of black sesame seeds, flaked sea salt, and 1/4 teaspoon poppy seeds. Adjust quantities to taste.

Ways To Modify This Cream Cheese Board Recipe

  • Add fresh herbs like dill or extra chives for a bright finish.
  • Use flavored cream cheese, such as lemon dill or garlic & herb, for a different base profile.
  • Substitute poached or flaked salmon for a milder salmon flavor.
  • Get creative with toppings: drizzle of honey or hot honey, arugula, figs, or an additional cheese can add interesting contrasts.

Can I Make This Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Board Dairy Free?

Yes. Use your favorite dairy-free or vegan cream cheese. Because textures differ, reduce lemon juice and water slightly when blending if the dairy-free spread seems too thin.

Can I Make This Cream Cheese Board Paleo?

You can make paleo-friendly versions using plant-based or nut-based cream cheese recipes. If following paleo strictly, check the smoked salmon label for added sugars or non-paleo ingredients.

Can I Make This In Advance?

Yes. To avoid the cream cheese becoming watery, prepare the spread the morning of serving and top shortly before guests arrive. Alternatively, blend the cream cheese and store it, and keep the salmon and toppings chopped in airtight containers to assemble on the day.

What About Leftovers?

Store leftovers covered in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Enjoy spread on toast, bagels, or cucumber slices.
