The 7 Best Brunch & Breakfast Restaurants in Portland, Maine — a local’s guide to the city’s most-loved morning spots that are anything but touristy.
Happy weekend! The weather in Portland is looking gorgeous, and there’s no better plan than soaking up sun, sipping iced coffee, and sampling excellent brunch around town.
After nearly a year living here, I’ve explored enough of Portland’s food scene to recommend the spots I keep returning to. Yes, the waterfront and lighthouses are worth a visit, but if you want the real local experience, follow the brunch crowds.
Portlanders take brunch seriously. On any weekend you’ll find groggy, messy-bunned folks lined up for bottomless coffee, creative benedicts, and generous portions. Below are seven of my favorite brunch destinations in Portland, Maine, along with hours and recommended dishes. Insider tip: arrive early to avoid long waits.
Bayside American Cafe
Often still called Bintliff’s by locals, Bayside American Cafe is a must for brunch. It’s a short ride from the Old Port, and the trip is worth it. The portions are generous, the mimosas pack a punch, and the eclectic, homey decor feels like brunch at a welcoming relative’s house.
Brunch Hours:
7 AM – 2 PM, daily
Recommended Dish:
House Smoked Salmon Platter
Local 188
Local 188 is one of Portland’s larger dining rooms and normally serves tapas-style plates, but it switches into brunch mode on weekends. The open kitchen and large bar create an airy, lively atmosphere that stands out from Portland’s usually intimate eateries.
Brunch Hours:
9 AM – 2 PM, Saturday & Sunday
Recommended Dish:
Mushroom & Herb Scramble
The Saltbox Cafe
The Saltbox operates from a tiny food truck perched on the Eastern Promenade. While it’s not a sit-down restaurant, the view alone makes it worth a stop. The breakfast sandwiches are made from scratch and pair perfectly with coffee and the salty sea air. Check their Facebook or social feed for location updates and arrive early—items often sell out.
Brunch Hours:
8:30 AM – 2 PM, or until sold out, daily
Recommended Dish:
Pesto & Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich
Hot Suppa
Hot Suppa channels Southern comfort food with a Portland twist. The small space delivers big flavors: local grits, pulled pork egg sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and chicken and waffles all feature on the menu. If you miss the South, this is the place to get that hearty, familiar brunch feel.
Brunch Hours:
7 AM – 2 PM daily (7:30 AM on Sundays)
Recommended Dish:
Red Green Burrito
Portland Pottery Cafe
This tucked-away favorite sits beside a pottery workshop and feels bright, sunny, and comfortably homey. Pottery pieces are displayed and for sale, which gives you something to browse while you wait. They offer large dessert items—cookies and rice krispie treats the size of your face—along with homemade cakes and gluten-free options. It’s an ideal spot to linger with a book and a bottomless coffee served in a handcrafted mug.
Brunch Hours:
Open every day for breakfast at 8 AM; Sunday brunch 9 AM – 2 PM
Recommended Dish:
Good Morning Wrap (served “naked” or with toast instead of a wrap)
Bayou Kitchen
Bayou Kitchen brings New Orleans-inspired flavors to Portland. Decor evokes Nawlins with beads and bayou flair, and the menu delivers bold Southern-style dishes. It’s a bit off the main downtown stretch, but it’s worth the trip for a flavorful, lively brunch experience.
Brunch Hours:
7 AM – 2 PM daily (8 AM on Sundays)
Recommended Dish:
El Rancho Verde Omelette
Local Sprouts Cafe
Local Sprouts is worker-owned and prioritizes locally sourced, organic ingredients. It’s a bright, community-minded cafe with excellent coffee—the roast they use is a local favorite and often what brings me back. On Sundays they frequently host live music, making it brunch plus a show: great food, great coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Brunch Hours:
8 AM – 3 PM daily
Recommended Dish:
Bones Scramble — and definitely the coffee
